Katharina Althaus has won Olympia silver in ski jumping and gives the German team to the first medal in the winter games in China. The 25-year-old had to give himself beaten on Saturday only the Slovenian Ursa Bogataj. Bronze also secured Nika Kriznar from Slovenia. Althaus jumped from the normal hill in Zhangjiakou 105.5 and 94 meters wide.
The Oberstdorferin was started as a favorite on a medal in the competition and was the lead after the first passage. In the overall World Cup she is ranked two. The leading Marita Kramer from Austria could not participate in the Olympic competition because of a corona infection.
In the past games in Pyeongchang, Althaus had won behind Maren Lundby silver. Neither the Norwegian who omits the complete season, nor the molded vogt is this time. Althaus has long since taken over Vogt’s role in the German team. The Allgäuerin has been the most constant German Springer and absolute service provider in the team of national coach Maximilian Mechler, who has taken the office in the summer of Andreas Bauer.
After it was not so good in the past season – no German Springer made it in a single world cup on the podest – Althaus has returned to old strength this winter. At the World Cup in Lillehammer won, in total, Althaus sprang seven times on the podium. In changing winches and icy cold was in demand in Zhangjiakou nervous strength. Althaus and their best competitions from Slovenia delivered a large ski jump show from almost empty ranks.
Monday the next medal chance beckons
Kramers lacked Althaus did not know as an opportunity for himself understood. “I’m sorry for you that you can not jump with us here,” she had already said after strong training jumps. “I hope she gets her chance in four years.”
Already on Monday, Althaus has the next possibility to win another medal. Together with a team colleague and two jumpers from the team of Bundestrainer Stefan Horngacher, she wants to attack in the Mixed team.
